In my lifetime, I have owned approximately 1,473 pairs of sunglasses. Ok, that may be a SLIGHT exaggeration, but still not TOO far off. When I think back to the sunglasses I have owned, it is a blur of cheap plastic, “chrome” frames, and lenses made of who knows what that seemed to scratch every time my eyelashes brush against them. I have had lenses mysteriously just pop out of their frames and ear pieces break at the slightest gust of wind. I have witnessed sunglasses mysteriously disappearing after falling beneath the seat of my car, and felt guilt ridden at the realization that I left them sitting in a bathroom somewhere I will undoubtedly never visit again.
All of these experiences are the both the cause and result of purchasing very poor sunglasses over the years of my life. Growing up, I was always enamored with my father’s sunglasses. Sunglasses provide protection from glare. Certain surfaces, such as water, can reflect a great deal of light, and the bright spots can be distracting or can hide objects. Good sunglasses can completely eliminate this kind of glare using polarization (we'll discuss polarization later).
Sunglasses eliminate specific frequencies of light. Certain frequencies of light can blur vision, and others can enhance contrast. Choosing the right color for your sunglasses lets them work better in specific situations.
When you buy a pair of cheap sunglasses, you often give up all of these benefits and can even make things worse. For example, if your sunglasses offer no UV protection, you increase your exposure to UV rays. The cheap sunglasses block some of the light, causing your iris to open to allow more light in. This lets in more of the UV light as well, increasing the damage UV light can cause to the retina.
So there is a difference. Buying the right pair of good sunglasses for the conditions in which you use them gives you maximum protection and performance.

"A lot of people come to the ER with burned corneas each summer," Richard O'Brien, MD, an emergency physician with the Moses Taylor Hospital in Scranton, Penn., tells WebMD.
"We have a lot of NASCAR up here. You'd be amazed how many people go to that, a concert, or other all-day event without wearing a visor cap and sunglasses. They even lie on their shiny RVs -- that is like being in a tanning booth.
"They are fine at first, then go home, go to sleep, and wake up in an hour in excruciating pain. I have had people come in here crying."
The sun, of course, shoots out rays of different lengths. The most damaging are the ultraviolet rays, which are classified as UVA and UVB.
"Most decent sunglasses," Richard Bensinger, MD, an ophthalmologist in private practice in Seattle, tells WebMD, "protect against UVB. If they also protect against UVA, it should say so on them."
Sunglasses may be one thing you don't want to get at the Dollar Store, O'Brien observes. They should be close to the face or wraparound. Some people like dark tints, but the UV-blocking coating is the same on any color. Polarized lenses may be more comfortable for workers outside because they block glare.
Too much ultraviolet can accelerate the formation of cataracts, Bensinger adds. "There are very solid studies that show this; people who stayed in the sun tended to get cataracts eight to 10 years before a carefully selected group that was mostly in the shade or indoors."

One observation....I have worn B&W for many years. Then I switched to Corning Serengetis when a relative worked in their prototype department - both excellent glasses.
Both had slightly larger lenses offering more eye-cover and especially protection from overhead sun than the Randolph Aviators.

I've been wearing high-end sunglasses for 43 years; I remember when Ray Bans' Aviators gold frames were 14 karat and sturdy. Things changed over the years, but after buying Randolph Engineering's 61mm tan polarized Sportsman, I can testify that they have raised the standard higher than way back then. I could be wrong but, I think polarized lenses were only available in plastic. I liked polarizing, but I was a staunch glass lens man. Randolph Engineering's glasses are solid old-time quality, for certain.

Products are high quality and the tints are fairly complete. The only issue I have is the lack of a standoff bar to keep glasses from fogging in High humidity. Otherwise there excellent.

These are outstanding sunglasses! They possess an interesting mix of: style, performance, heritage, quality, and authority. I have received some interesting looks while wearing these sunglasses! The flash mirror tent doesn't necessarily seem reduce brightness and glare any more than perhaps a darker lense. However, the day isn't quite as bright with these glasses on. On a side note, these shades feel indestructible! These are now my favorite pair of sunglasses!
