My eyes often feel tired after staring at the computer all day. So I'm wondering if glasses designed for computer use actually help (for example, those yellow-tinted glasses I've seen on Randolph Eyewear. They seem pricey and I'm a little skeptical about all the claims, but I also want to protect my vision. 

Vision problems are unfortunately one of the hazards of too much screen time. In fact, theVision Council found that 70 percent of US adults in one survey reported having some kind of digital eye strain (strained, dry, or red eyes; blurred vision; headaches; back pain; neck pain; or general fatigue) as a result of using digital devices for hours at a time.P

We've previously noted several ways to prevent or reduce eyestrain, including using the 20-20-20 rule to regularly give your eyes a break and ergonomically optimizing your workstation. In addition to those essential tweaks, computer eyewear could also alleviate or prevent digital eyestrain, depending on your situation. I talked to several eye health experts to find out more about these special glasses, and also did a two-week trial comparing new specially-coated glasses with older ones. Here's what I learned.

Computer glasses are special-purpose eyeglasses meant to optimize your eyesight when you're looking at digital screens. They're designed to: reduce glare (a major cause of eyestrain), increase contrast, and maximize what you see through the lenses—making it easier to look at a screen for longer periods of time. P

Validating my experience, Dr. Jeffrey Anshel, an optometrist and computer vision consultant (who was also the technical adviser for Gunnar Optiks), points out that when it comes to coatings, you have two general choices: old and new. Older ones do peel and "craze," resulting in unsightly cracks, while newer ones wear very well and have a one-year warranty. So when you're at the eye doctor, you'll want to ask for the latest coating—and perhaps buy new glasses even if your prescription hasn't changed in the last few years, because coatings definitely have improved.PAnti-reflective (AR) coating: Anti-reflective coatings reduce glare bouncing off screens and from light sources. Choose Your Color Wisely

Different lens tints filter different wavelengths of light. Some may enhance or distort colors and affect contrast. Select tint based on need.

• Green—Allows true color perception and good contrast in bright light; reduces eyestrain in bright light.

• Gray—Allows true color perception, but does not enhance contrast; good for cycling or running.

• Brown—Good in hazy sun, enhances contrast; good for high-glare environments.

• Amber—Brightens cloudy, hazy, or foggy skies; excellent for contrast; minimizes eyestrain; distorts color (images look yellow-orange).

• Yellow—Improves contrast and depth perception in low light; good for overcast days.

• Red—Excellent depth perception in low light; contrast objects against blue or green backgrounds.

• Mirrored—Reflects high-intensity light to reduce glare; available in various colors.

Do those sunglasses for specific sports really make a difference?

Johnny Depp may owe his slim physique to blue tinted eyeglasses

Pirates of the Caribbean actor Johnny Depp, 45, is famous for his youthful appearance and slim physique. Hollywood gossip blogger Janet Charlton attributes this to workouts and a healthy diet of chicken, tuna packed in water, soy milk, and fruits such as blueberries, pineapple, and kiwi fruit.

But reports in the Japanese media have raised another possible influence on Depp’s healthy physique: the blue tinted eyeglasses that he was observed wearing during his Japanese promotional tour for the third installment in the Pirates series, in which he portrays Captain Jack Sparrow.

Traditionally eyeglasses and sunglasses have been designed to filter out blue light rather than to emphasize it. The short wavelengths of blue light areharder for eyes to focus and can cause eye strain. Blue light also emphasizes dust and moisture in the air, creating a hazy look. Considering these factors, why would Depp have taken up wearing blue eyeglasses in Japan?

It turns out that for several years prior to Depp’s visit blue eyeglasses had been in the news in Japan for their purported appetite suppressant effect. You might think that any such effect would simply be from the unappetizing appearance of your meal while wearing the glasses. After all, there aren’t many foods that are blue (although those that are contain anthocyanins, cancer-fighting antioxidants that help protect against cell damage).

But there is another possible explanation for the glasses’ claimed effectiveness.

Serotonin and weight loss

In May 2005 a Japanese television program first reported that when the city of Glasgow, Scotland, changed some of their orangish street lights to bluish lights a mysterious effect was noticed: Glaswegians suddenly mellowed out and the city’s crime rate dropped.

Some attributed the change to an increase in serotonin in the residents’ brains, an increase which has been associated with blue light.

Serotonin has been connected with various effects on mood, sleep and appetite. MAO inhibitors that reduce the breakdown of natural serotonin are often used to treat depression. The illicit drug ecstasy produces feelings of empathy by releasing serotonin.

In excess serotonin can precipitate cardiac disease and other dangerous conditions. The appetite control drug Fen-phen, which was thought to have worked by enhancing the brain’s release of serotonin, has been blamed for causing valvular heart disease in some patients.

Following the Japanese television report about Glasgow, in 2006 the municipal authorities in Nono City in Japan’s Ishikawa Prefecture installed blue street lights as a pilot project. The results are still pending.

The 2005 television report was also seen by a twenty-something Osaka entrepreneur named Yasuhira Niioda, who by that time had already spent a couple of years working with lens manufacturers to develop blue fashion sunglasses for dieting purposes. Niioda quickly finalized his design and his company, FTF, Inc., has been marketing Blue Diet Glasses through its Web site and other retail channels ever since. The glasses have been introduced to consumers in magazines and on television.

Mr. Niioda is not aware of any purchases of FTF’s Blue Diet Glasses by Depp, or at least he’s not telling.  (actually, he is wearing Randolph Eyewear glasses with a bright chrome frame, made in the USA.)
