• Sunglasses provide protection from intense light. When the eye receives too much light, it naturally closes the iris. Once it has closed the iris as far as it can, the next step is squinting. If there is still too much light, as there can be when sunlight is reflecting off of snow, the result is damage to the retina. Good sunglasses can block light entering the eyes by as much as 97 percent to avoid damage.
• Sunglasses provide protection from glare. Certain surfaces, such as water, can reflect a great deal of light, and the bright spots can be distracting or can hide objects. Good sunglasses can completely eliminate this kind of glare using polarization (we'll discuss polarization later).
• Sunglasses eliminate specific frequencies of light. Certain frequencies of light can blur vision, and others can enhance contrast. Choosing the right color for your sunglasses lets them work better in specific situations.

When you buy a pair of cheap sunglasses, you often give up all of these benefits and can even make things worse. For example, if your sunglasses offer no UV protection, you increase your exposure to UV rays. The cheap sunglasses block some of the light, causing your iris to open to allow more light in. This lets in more of the UV light as well, increasing the damage UV light can cause to the retina.

So there is a difference. Buying the right pair of good sunglasses for the conditions in which you use them gives you maximum protection and performance.

When I was real little, I wanted very badly to be in the military. My grandparents found a pair of Randolph aviators in a parking lot (this was sometime in the early ’90s). They washed them, bent the frames back into shape and gave them to me. They were humongous on me then, but I have them to this day and they are my favorite pair of sunglasses. And you can’t beat getting them for free, even if it was from the asphalt of a parking lot!

To Jason: AFAIK American Optical is the originator the the more square-ish aviator frame, who introduced it in the late 40s for the military. I believe Ray-Ban introduced their ‘Caravan’ model in ’57 and these days RE is the largest (though not only) supplier of aviators (squared and teardrop) to the US military.

Founders Jan Waszkiewicz and Stanley Zaleski had launched the company in 1972 as an optical machinery factory.

Six years later, they saw tough times ahead and chose to reinvent Randolph as a maker of high-quality sunglasses.

“They decided that they needed to do something, or else they were going to be out of business,” said chief executive Peter Waszkiewicz. “There wasn’t going to be enough tool work to do.”

Today, Randolph Engineering remains a small business, but its products are on display to millions as popular eyewear for characters in movies and television shows.

Randolph’s sunglasses range in price from $129 to $349 a pair, but they all start with imported wire bent into frames.

“The biggest hit was ‘Mad Men,’ ” said Mary Waszkiewicz, the company’s marketing manager. Its sunglasses appeared on actor Jon Hamm’s face for the first three seasons of the popular show.

“Everyone wants to look like Don Draper,” she said, referring to Hamm’s character.

Randolph Eyewear glasses have enjoyed their share of screen time in movie theaters, as well. Tom Cruise wore Randolph’s aviator sunglasses in April’s “Oblivion,” a post-apocalyptic action movie. Ben Kingsley wore Randolph shades in “Iron Man 3” in May.

For many years, the company produced sunglasses exclusively for military pilots. In the 1990s, Randolph Engineering slowly began to sell sunglasses to retail customers. Today, tucked down a side street among the restaurants, stores, and office buildings in the town of Randolph, the company’s sunglass factory makes more than 500,000 pairs of glasses a year, Peter Waszkiewicz said.

“People are going to buy our product because they like our story,” he added.

Hollywood star power has also given a boost to the brand as it competes against popular higher-end names like Ray Ban and Oakley, both of which are owned by the Italian sunglass giant Luxottica.

But Randolph is still a very small player in a big industry that generated $3.2 billion in sales last year. The company projects sales of as much as $20 million this year, up from $8 million in 2011.

It has added 24 jobs in recent years, building the workforce to 60 employees.

Randolph counts on its distinctive style to make an impression in the minds of consumers. The straight-back sides of many sunglasses, for example, were created because they are easy to put on under a helmet, harkening back to the company’s military history.

But military pilots probably don’t have much use for 23 karat gold-plated sunglasses, one of the finishes available for many of Randolph’s sunglasses styles. The company’s glasses range in price from $129 to $349.

No matter what an individual pair of sunglasses costs, all Randolph Engineering sunglasses originate in the same place. A machine in the factory begins the process by bending imported wire into eyeglass frames to fit individual lenses. It can make up to 2,000 frames a day.

Then, employees solder hinges and other small parts to the frames, working their fingers deftly around red-hot machines.

Workers add the sides, or temples, to the glasses, while others use a machine that laser-cuts glass and polycarbonate lenses to fit different frame shapes. The entire cutting process takes just 17 seconds.

Plated frames are washed and polished in sudsy, round tubs that contain rough or smooth stones, depending on whether the glasses need a matte or a shiny finish. Skilled workers, some of whom have been employed by Randolph for 25 years, complete each step of the manufacturing process.

“It’s unusual in the eyeglass industry to be able to achieve that level of being made in the US, just because of the specialized material and tools, and it’s hard to find skilled workers,” said Marge Axelrad, executive director of Vision Monday, a trade publication.

No more than 4 percent of sunglasses are manufactured in the United States, said Steven Kodey, senior director of industry research at the Vision Council, which represents optical industry suppliers and manufacturers.

That’s a dauntingly small slice of a big business, but customers are sometimes drawn to companies like Randolph and their sunglasses specifically because the products are made in America.

Michele Zuccala, owner of the Boston optical shop South End Eye, said customers often come in looking for famous-brand sunglasses but leave with a pair from a lesser-known company like Randolph.

“People like the fact that we have a local company, something made in the USA,” she said. “There’s a lot of buzz on them.”

Product Review - Falcon - Randolph Eyewear

If you are in the market for a great pair of shooting glasses, look no further than the Ranger Falcons by Randolph Eyewear.  I recently tested them out at the range, shooting trap in the bright sun and .22s under a shady wooden structure.

I’ll speak to their comfort and effectiveness in a moment, but first a little bit about the product and the company behind it.

Founded in 1972, Randolph Engineering exemplifies the American Dream – two Polish immigrants start a small tool and die company in Randolph, Massachusetts, and become one of the leading optical companies in this field in the country.

Randolph Engineering began manufacturing aviator sunglasses for the US Air Force in the late 1970s and won the government bid to become the prime contractor in 1982.

Learning about the quality of its sunglasses through the military, civilians demanded commercial sunglasses and Randolph Eyewear was happy to oblige.

The Ranger Falcon Kit, which I tested out last week, is named after the F-16 Fighting Falcon, an American fighter jet known for the cockpit’s exceptional field of view.  Not coincidentally, the Falcon’s shield design offers shooters an equally exceptional view.

Features include unobstructed field of view, interchangeable NexPC shield lenses, and interchangeable nose pads. The kit also includes a semi-rigid nylon carrying case, cleaning cloth, maintenance kit, and micro-fiber carrying pouch.

I am thrilled that the Ranger Falcon Kit includes three interchangeable shield lenses:

• HD (an orange lens) offers crisp vision by filtering out blue light to increase contrast. This is the best choice for medium light conditions and is what I used under the shelter while shooting the .22 rifle.
• Dark Purple is a great lens for bright conditions.  It provides a fantastic contrast of orange targets against blue sky.  Also great for reducing glare and for use in snow.  I used this lens while shooting trap in the sun.
• Medium Yellow highlights orange clay targets and works well in low light or overcast conditions.

I found the Ranger Falcons to be completely comfortable.  They are lightweight, the nose pads hit at the right place, and the unobstructed field of view is exceptional.  Beyond mere comfort, the clarity of the lenses was amazing.  The clay targets popped against the blue sky like never before and looking downrange at paper targets was no strain at all.

I really cannot say enough about how natural and easy the Ranger Falcon shooting glasses were to use.  They just felt right.  In no way were they a distraction.  I did not spend one moment thinking about them, which is important when shooting.  In addition, I loved the options in the lenses.  The fact that all three were readily available in one case made changing the lenses due to shooting conditions that much easier.
